A hat for every new subscriber

The goal

When someone subscribes, a party hat appears on your model's head and stays for five minutes, while chat welcomes them to the hat club. Tier 3 subscribers get a golden crown instead. A new sub while a hat is on swaps it and starts the five minutes again.

Time: about 15 minutes. Level: intermediate (uses a Switch step).

What you need

  • CroStream connected to VTube Studio, with your model loaded, and logged in to Twitch.
  • Two pictures in your media library, PNGs with transparent backgrounds: party-hat.png and crown.png.
  • The Load custom images as items permission, granted on the VTube Studio page's Permissions card (how).

Step 1: Set a head anchor

  1. Open Integrations → VTube Studio.
  2. In the Anchors card, click the head suggestion.
  3. Click Click on model, switch to VTube Studio, and click the top of your model's head, where the hat should sit.

Step 2: Build the macro

  1. Click Macros, then New macro. Set Name to Sub hat.
  2. Filter the palette for switch and click Switch (under Tools). Set Value to match to {tier}.
  3. In the first Case, type 3 and press Enter. Under it, add Put on a prop (filter for prop):

    Setting Value
    Image from media
    Media library image crown.png
    Anchor head
    Size 0.3
    For how long 5m
  4. Under Default, add a second Put on a prop with the same settings, but party-hat.png as the Media library image.

  5. Below the Switch, add Send chat message (under Twitch): Welcome to the hat club, {user}!
  6. Click Save.

Both prop steps use the head anchor and keep Replace an earlier prop on, so there's only ever one hat: a new sub's hat takes the place of the last one.

Step 3: Add the trigger

  1. Click Triggers, then New trigger. Set Name to Sub hat.
  2. Under When, pick Subscription. Leave Tier on any.
  3. Under Then run, pick Sub hat, then click Save.

Check it works

  1. Click Test on the trigger. A test sub is tier 1, so the party hat goes on, and the welcome goes to chat.
  2. Hat too low, too big, crooked? Adjust Size (and Angle) in both prop steps, or click Click spot next to the anchor and click a little higher. Test again.
  3. To see the crown, set the trigger's Tier to 3, save, and click Test: the test sub is then tier 3. Set Tier back to any and save.

Variables used

Variable Becomes
{user} The subscriber's display name.
{tier} 1, 2 or 3. Prime subs are 1.

Make it yours

  • Hats for gift bombs too. Set the trigger's Gifted subs option to include. Every recipient then fires it; with Replace an earlier prop on, a gift of 20 still leaves just one hat, and the welcome goes out 20 times. To welcome the gifter once instead, make a separate trigger on Gifted subs.
  • Anniversary crowns. Use the Subscription event's Minimum months (say 12) in a second trigger with its own macro and picture.
  • Hats that stay. Empty For how long and the hat stays until you take it off with Remove CroStream's items in the VTube Studio page's Model card, or until CroStream disconnects.

Troubleshooting

What you see What to do
No "head" anchor for model … The loaded model has no head anchor. Set one (step 1).
VTube Studio hasn't allowed CroStream to load images Grant Load custom images as items on the Permissions card.
The hat is hidden behind the hair In front of the model must be on in both prop steps.
The crown never shows The first case must say exactly 3. Test a tier 3 sub as described in Check it works.

Every setting of the step: Put on a prop. More fixes in Troubleshooting.
