BRB scene when your face is lost

The goal

You get up to grab a drink. Five seconds after VTube Studio loses track of your face, OBS switches to your BRB scene, so viewers don't watch a frozen model. When you sit back down and VTube Studio finds your face, OBS switches back to your main scene. A quick glance away or a sneeze changes nothing.

Time: about 15 minutes. Level: intermediate (uses Delay and If steps).

What you need

How it works

Two triggers, two macros:

Trigger Event Macro
Face lost Tracking is lost or found: face, lost Waits 5 seconds, then switches to BRB if your face is still gone.
Face found Tracking is lost or found: face, found Switches back to Gameplay, but only from BRB.

The checks matter. The 5-second wait with a second look at the tracking ignores short blips, and the "only from BRB" check means finding your face never yanks you out of a scene you chose yourself.

Step 1: The "away" macro

  1. Click Macros, then New macro. Set Name to Face lost: BRB.
  2. Filter the palette for delay and click Delay (under Tools). Set for to 5s.
  3. Add an If step. Click Choose what to check…, choose VTube Studio sees your face, then is off.
  4. Under Then, add Switch scene (under OBS Studio) and set Scene to BRB.
  5. Click Save.

Step 2: The "back" macro

  1. Click New macro. Set Name to Face found: back.
  2. Add an If step. Choose Current scene, then is, then BRB.
  3. Under Then, add Switch scene and set Scene to Gameplay.
  4. Click Save.

Step 3: The triggers

  1. Click Triggers, then New trigger. Set Name to Face lost.
  2. Under When, pick Tracking is lost or found (under VTube Studio). Set Part to face and When to lost.
  3. Under Then run, pick Face lost: BRB, then click Save.
  4. Make a second trigger, Face found, the same way, with When set to found, running Face found: back.

Check it works

  1. Make sure OBS shows Gameplay, then cover your camera or step out of frame. On the VTube Studio page, the Model card's Tracking dot for Face goes grey.
  2. After 5 seconds, OBS switches to BRB.
  3. Sit back down. As soon as your face is found, OBS switches back to Gameplay.
  4. Look away for just a second or two: nothing switches.

Testing with the Test button

Test on the Face lost trigger runs the macro for real, but the If step reads your actual tracking. With your face in view, it rightly does nothing. Covering the camera is the real test.

Variables used

Variable Becomes
{part} face, left_hand or right_hand.
{found} true when it was found, false when lost.
{face_found} Whether your face is tracked right now.

This recipe uses the VTube Studio sees your face condition instead of {face_found}, because the condition is checked after the delay, when it matters.

Make it yours

  • Mute the mic too. Add Mute or unmute an OBS audio source for your microphone to the "away" macro, and unmute it in the "back" macro.
  • Tell chat. Add Send chat message to the "away" macro: brb, grabbing a drink!
  • A sleepy model. Instead of (or as well as) the scene, turn on a sleeping expression with Turn a VTube Studio expression on or off while you're away, and turn it off in the "back" macro.
  • Only while live. Add an If rule Stream is live is on to the "away" macro, so this doesn't run while you set up off-stream.

Troubleshooting

What you see What to do
Nothing happens when you step away Check the Model card's Tracking dots: if Face never goes grey, VTube Studio still thinks it sees you. Step further out of frame.
The If step fails instead of switching One of the conditions reads a live value from an integration that isn't connected: VTube Studio for the face, OBS for the scene. Connect both.
It switches back to the wrong scene Change Scene in the "back" macro's Switch scene step.
It switches to BRB during short blips Lengthen the Delay to 10s.
